About Us

Our Story

The Founders met when they both started their careers as Investment Banking Analysts at J.P. Morgan in New York after graduating from college. When not working late into the night, they would discuss common problems that they both saw in the financial modeling process. Namely a lack of standardization in building financial models, a high degree of data entry, version control issues and poor collaboration tools.

In 2015, the Founders launched a consulting business to provide financial modeling services to small and medium sized businesses. Experiences with these clients reaffirmed the Founders’ beliefs that they were not the only ones who were struggling with financial modeling problems.

In 2018, the Founders realized that Machine Learning had advanced to the point where they could solve many of the problems people faced in the financial modeling process. They raised Angel capital from a Partner at Motley Fool Ventures in 2019 to build the initial machine learning-based product.

Since then, they have continued to improve the product with a simple mission:

Varun Balan

Founder & CEO

Varun is a Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of RMI Insights providing the leadership, management, and vision necessary to ensure that the Company delivers innovative and value-add solutions to its diverse client base.

Prior to starting RMI Insights, Varun was the COO of a venture backed start-up. He leveraged and applied the learnings from that experience to bolster RMI Insights’ growth trajectory.

Varun began his career as an Investment Banker at J.P. Morgan in their Real Estate, Gaming & Lodging Investment Banking Group. Varun also worked in Real Estate Private Equity at the Related Companies – one of the largest Private Real Estate Development firms in the world – covering the Equinox Fitness & Soulcycle portfolio companies.

Varun holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Political Economy from the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with multiple honors and community service awards.

Sylvester L. Burley

Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer

Sylvester L. Burley: Sylvester is a Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer of RMI Insights, where he is involved in product development, liaising with customers on their commercial needs and technology capabilities, and leveraging his 10 years of private credit, private equity, and investment banking experience to implement best practices and institutional-quality workflows.

Previously, Sylvester was a Vice President at Avante Capital Partners (2018 SBIC of the Year), a Senior Associate at Bregal Energy, and Associate at Riverstone Holdings (largest energy-dedicated PE firm by AUM). At these various private equity firms, Sylvester was responsible for sourcing, transaction execution, and portfolio management support.

Sylvester started his career in J.P. Morgan’s Energy Investment Banking Group, where he was ranked as the top analyst both years. Sylvester holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a secondary degree in Mathematics from Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude, was a John Harvard scholar, and a Detur Prize recipient.
